What Is It?

Programs like Microsoft Office Excel, OpenOffice Calc, Apple iWork Numbers, and Google Docs can be used to manage grades and submissions for a class. While hand-calculating each cell is a possibility, there are many ways to automatically calculate grades in spreadsheet programs. Richard Zach has written an article, "Using Spreadsheets to Keep Track of Students' Grades", that deals with lots of basic, useful, functionality in a generic spreadsheet program. Teaching Resources Center has a more comprehensive guide, "Excel for Grade Management" [PDF], but it is written with only Microsoft Office Excel in mind.
