What Is It?

The Blackboard Academic Suite consists of three systems for course, content, and community management. The Blackboard Learning System allows the instructor to create or add web-based lessons, assessments, and surveys. There are also commercial pre-packaged lessons and assessments for some courses. The Learning System allows the instructor to enter grades in a gradebook and has performance reporting applications for student performance. The web-based discussion forums allow students to communicate and respond to the instructor and each other. The Blackboard Community System targets broader connections than the Learning System. It provides resources for learning communities and clubs, such as e-mail and chat. It also provides access control between different domains within one institution or between multiple institutions. The Blackboard Content System is a institution-level management system to facilitate content sharing between classes or sections. It allows versioning, disk and bandwidth quotas, and content review and approval workflows. -- Blackboard Website, 2009-10-18
